A nuanced account of an urban fall. Is it the universe which conspires against Kelcey, or have his own actions ensured his collapse? While Kelcey seems justified in the first half of the novella, his behavior becomes increasingly indefensible- he and his mother switch roles somewhere in the middle, protagonist becoming antagonist and vice versa.

This balanced analysis is what distinguishes the text from so many other fin de siecle tales of urban falls (a la Dreiser or Cranes own Maggie), in which the account is primarily oriented towards sympathetic portrayal of the falling character.
